PART THREE
“You know, Wayne,” said Peter Queen as they sat at the palm fringed bar by the pool. He was wearing Bermuda shorts and an Hawaiian shirt. “I’ve never seen that mob of perverts so normal.”
During the first few days, the small staff of Mull Atoll, suffered a reign of terror as the party from England went on a rampage like a bunch of escaped prisoners.
It took a heavy tropical storm, with howling winds to slow them down. This first taste of the power of the elements cowered them. When the wind had died down and the sun came out again to dry up the sodden vegetation, the party, subdued, came into the light, awed by what they had seen.
They settled down to a more placid life, swimming in the surf, shooting reel after reel of cine film and taking hundreds of snap shots.
Where, in the first couple of days, the Polaroid camera worked overtime as the wild bunch, creeping around like spies, took candid shots of people making love in the sand and the bush, it now lay in a corner, unused. Those tightly wound springs had uncoiled and the band were able to relax and enjoy themselves without the need of artificial aids.
The days in fact lulled gently by but for Wayne they were flying too quickly. It took direct action by Birgita to get him into her bed. Her hints went unnoticed, for Wayne just did not realise, or even imagine that Birgita, the cool, haughty beauty could have an interest in him.
To Wayne, she was like she was to the rest of the world, unattainable.
But the night he realised it, was a night he’d never forget. They’d all been drinking and Birgita had whispered in his ear.
Wayne had looked up startled, but the blonde was staring into the distance and he wondered if he had actually heard those words.
He found out later that he had, as Birgita slithered through the darkness and underneath the thin cotton sheet that covered his bed. After four glorious hours Birgita had risen, leaving with a warning that whatever happened was to be kept a deadly secret, or there’d be no more nights like that.
It was easy for Wayne to keep his mouth shut, for even though it happened, he still couldn’t believe it. And up until that day no one had a hint of a suspicion and Birgita kept up her mystery image.
Wayne also got to know the rest of the band better and his first impressions died. They weren’t so bad after all he decided.
Even Doc, who spent most of his time at the piano in the ballroom, ventured out into the sunshine and forgot his worries about the future.
“This was the best idea I’ve had,” Peter continued. “By the time they get back to work they’ll have so much energy Australia will get the best show the band has done in years.
“I can hardly believe it. We’ve worked wonders my boy.”
Wayne, tanned and looking extremely fit himself, grinned
“Just perfect isn’t it? And what’s more,” said Peter, “no-one knows we are here.
